Fluorescent Heterogeneities in Turbid Media: Limits for Detection with Dual-interfering Sources Excitation
نویسندگان
چکیده
A quantitative comparison between the single source and the dual-interfering sources configurations for the detection of fluorescent heterogeneities embedded in a piecewise highly scattering homogeneous fluorescent background was carried out. The study is based upon simulations using analytical solutions of the frequency domain diffuse photon density waves and practical signal-to-noise ratio considerations. Results show that the dual-interfering sources outperformed single source techniques for the detection of heterogeneities in terms of fluorophore concentration and lifetime contrast. To detect the same inhomogeneity, less concentration and lifetime contrast are required with dual-interfering sources. Fluorescent heterogeneities in turbid media: limits for detection, characterization, and comparison with absorption.
The fundamental limits for detection and characterization of fluorescent (phosphorescent) inhomogeneities embedded in tissuelike highly scattering turbid media are investigated. The absorption and fluorescence contrast introduced by exogenous fluorophores are also compared. Both analyses are based on practical signal-to-noise ratio considerations. For an object with fivefold fluorophore concent...
متن کاملFluorescence lifetime detection in turbid media using spatial frequency domain filtering of time domain measurements.
It is demonstrated that high spatial frequency filtering of time domain fluorescence signals can allow efficient detection of intrinsic fluorescence lifetimes from turbid media and the rejection of diffuse excitation leakage. The basis of this approach is the separation of diffuse fluorescence signals into diffuse and fluorescent components with distinct spatiotemporal behavior.
متن کاملInterfering diffusive photon-density waves with an absorbing-fluorescent inhomogeneity.
This work reports an investigation of the fluorescent field re-emitted by an object embedded in a highly scattering media illuminated by two-interfering sources. Simulations in the frequency domain with a finite difference method solving the diffusion equation were performed. The media considered had features typical of a soft-compressed breast. An absorbing-fluorescent inhomogeneity was embedd...
متن کاملEffect of excitation wavelength on penetration depth in nonlinear optical microscopy of turbid media.
We present a comparative study of two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) and second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging in turbid media at 800- and 1300-nm excitation. The depth-dependent decay of TPEF and SHG signals in turbid tissue phantoms is used to estimate the impact of light scattering on excitation intensity at each wavelength. A 50 to 80% increase in scattering length is observed using ...
